Spring Commencement

With bagpipes and drums blaring, Virginia Tech students graduating with Honors kept up the traditional marching from Hillcrest Hall to Lane Stadium. Director of Honors, Dr. “Jack” Dudley, led the charge on his sturdy Segway personal transporter. The weather held for the twilight ceremony which featured words of wisdom from Hoda Kotb. Students graduating with Latin Honors based on Grade Point Average (Cum Laude 3.40 – 3.59; Magna Cum Laude 3.6 – 3.79; Summa Cum Laude 3.8 – 4.0) wore white sashes over their regalia. Graduating “in Honors” requires further course and research effort. This year Virginia Tech and the University Honors Program awarded a total of 148 Honors diplomas recognizing students graduating “in Honors”. The Honors diploma breakdown is as follows:

New Honors Director Selected

Dr. Terry PapillonWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Papillon has been appointed as Honors director, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Papillon has worked with University Honors for several years and has most recently served as Faculty Preceptor to Main Campbell Hall. Dr. Papillon looks forward to working with all Honors students!


Our Mission Statement

The University Honors Program assures students with superior academic talent maximal opportunity to seek advantage in their use of the University curriculum, the opportunity to seek professional association with the senior faculty, the opportunity to refine their notions of responsibility and civility, and the opportunity to form a community of scholars with similar students. In addition, those students seeking entry into professional schools will be advised through an office specifically committed to their needs.

 

Upcoming Events

Freshman Orientation for Honors
  • Incoming freshmen should sign up for Orientation through the Dean of Students office.
  • Honors orientation sessions will coincide with each University Orientation session.
  • Students who have applied and been accepted to Honors will receive more information about Orientation in the mail in June.

Applying to Honors

  • The deadline is May 30, 2008.
  • Honors eligible students were sent a letter with instructions on how to apply.
  • If you feel that you are eligible but did not receive this letter please contact us.
