University Honors

Admissions to Honors

Admission to University Honors is by invitation only. Once you apply to Virginia Tech, University Honors will contact qualifying students and offer the opportunity to apply. The application will include an application form, a curriculum vita, a personal statement, and a letter of reference.

Freshmen looking to enter Honors should understand that admission to the program is based on an application specifically directed to University Honors and is completely separate from their application to Virginia Tech. Honors cannot send the application information to you until the Tech admissions office has received and processed your application to the University.

Entering freshmen are invited to apply to University Honors if:

  • their high school GPA is at least a 3.50 and the SAT I score is a 1400 (minimums: 620 Critical Reading, 600 Math) or above; or if
  • their high school GPA is at least a 3.70 with an SAT I score of 1300-1399 (minimums: 620 Critical Reading, 600 Math).

High school grade point average and test scores are only used to qualify students to apply to Honors.

Students who do not enter University Honors as incoming freshmen will be given the opportunity to join Honors after completion of their first semester. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 in order to apply.

Acceptance letters from University Honors will not begin to be sent until early April, so there is no need to become overly anxious until after that date.
