Ways to Receive Honors Credit

Honors students go above and beyond the standard degree requirement.

“This above all, Honors credit is to be earned by intent”
- Charles Dudley
Director, Honors Program

Honors diplomas usually call for at least 12 hours of Honors coursework. A grade of "B" or better must be earned in any course used toward requirements for these diplomas.

  1. Honors Course
    1. 1000/2000-level Honors course (e.g. ENGL 1204H). No more than 3 credit hours of all Honors courses taken at this level will count toward the Honors degree.
    2. 3000/4000-level Honors course.
  2. 4000/5000-level course that will not count toward your major(s) or minor(s). This option must be approved in writing no later than the last day to add a class.
  3. Graduate courses (5000/6000-level) that do not count toward the Master's degree (e.g. Combined degree program or other) or the degree requirements in your major.
  4. Honors Tutorial or Honors Independent Study (UH 4974).
  5. Honors Undergraduate Research (UH 4994).

  9. Semester Abroad. Spend an academic term abroad for academic credit. The study abroad experience must be documented on the transcript or equivalent. Only one term of study abroad may be substituted for 3 hours of Honors coursework.
  10. Internship/Co-Op. Any Honors student who participates in an Internship/Co-op may receive up to 3 credits recognition toward his or her Honors diploma.
